Polydactyly is an abnormal and congenital condition in which the person have more than five fingers or toes. This congenital condition is also named as hyperdactyly. Causes of polydactyly may include a lot of syndromes, however, it could born on itself too. Hyperdactyly may happen to occur on its own or it may be associated with some congenital syndrome such as asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy, Carpenter syndrome, Familial polydactyly, chondroectodermal dysplasia and many more. However, most of the patients do not carry congenital disease.
The extra finger of toe may be a piece of meat or it may have bone/bones in it. Commonly, the extra finger is found on the ulnar side of the hand. The extra digit may be removed surgically if the patient is cosmetically conscious!
